“The best “toys” that my father ever gave my brothers and I were a small collection of tools, scrap wood and a space in the back yard to use them. We collected, scavenged and salvaged everything and anything we could find around town to include in our projects. Straightening bent rusty nails we spent countless hours hammering together elaborate forts, houses and bases of operations.
To say that I was raised working with my hands is an understatement. We came to understand the world through our hands and the materials and tools we used.
I come from a small rural town in Canada of 600 people where everyone knew everyone, and agriculture was the mainstay of the population. Although I was the third generation of my family born in town I never felt like I belonged. I struggled and only felt like I really found my place when I commenced studying at the Alberta College of Art and Design.
Since that time I have always been interested in exploring ideas of belonging and notions of home and place as well as the cultural narrative we are surrounded by and how they affect our perceptions of self, identity and the world around us.”
